Among this year’s Emmy nominees for Best Music and Lyrics are Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. They’re in the running for their song “In the Market for a Miracle,” which was written for FOX’s telecast of “A Christmas Story Live!” last December. Back in 2012 the stage musical adaptation of the 1983 holiday classic marked the pair’s Broadway debut and earned both of them their very first Tony nomination the following year. Just six years later the Emmy is all the songwriting duo needs to complete their EGOT grand slam of showbiz awards.
Pasek and Paul’s journey towards EGOT officially began on February 26, 2017, when they won the Oscar for Best Original Song along with Justin Hurwitz for “City of Stars” from “La La Land.” They even came close to repeating earlier this year when they were nominated again for “This is Me” from “The Greatest Showman,” but lost to Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for “Remember Me” from “Coco.” Incidentally, Robert Lopez was the last person to achieve EGOT.
Just a few months after Pasek and Paul’s Oscar win their breakout musical “Dear Evan Hansen” won six Tony Awards (including Best Musical) on June 11. Among the other five accolades that show took home was Best Original Score for Pasek and Paul.
Then at the Grammys this past January “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” competed in two categories each. While “City of Stars” lost the award for Best Visual Media Song to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go” from “Moana,” Pasek and Paul still managed to pull off a win in the category of Best Musical Theater Album for “Evan Hansen.” Three down, one to go.
For “A Christmas Story Live!” “In the Market for a Miracle” was written as a Hanukkah number for Ana Gasteyer, who played the role of Mrs. Schwartz. While critics were somewhat mixed on the telecast as a whole, some of them still found that number to be a highlight.
Robert Lloyd (Los Angeles Times) wrote, “Schwartz’s mother, previously an offended voice on the other end of a phone call, was here gloriously embodied by Ana Gasteyer, who brought in a Hanukkah theme (‘We got matzo balls / And the Maccabees’) and a ‘Fiddler’ melody.” Andy Swift (TV Line) wrote: “Can we talk about those notes Gasteyer hit toward the end of ‘In the Market for a Miracle’?”
Pasek and Paul could be among five individuals to complete their EGOT in September, along with John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for another live musical, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” But Pasek and Paul would break records if they do it. They will be the fastest to achieve the feat — less than 2 years, compared to Lopez who is the current fastest at 10 years. And they would be the youngest: both are 33, which is 6 years younger than Lopez was when he wrapped up his grand slam in 2014 with his Oscar for “Let it Go” from “Frozen.”
So do you think Pasek and Paul will become the first millennials to EGOT?
