It has been a pretty outstanding first season for “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors,” which started in October as a kind of curiosity alongside its grownup counterpart. But the adult results went haywire all season, to the point where the ultimate Mirror Ball champion, Bobby Bones, couldn’t hold a candle to any of the child finalists in terms of dance quality. It turns out that the kids are alright — more than alright, in fact. I think “Juniors” outshined the original series this season.
But who deserves to win? There are four finalists going into the season finale episode on Sunday night, December 9: “Black-ish” actor Miles Brown, skateboarder Sky Brown, “Avengers” actress Ariana Greenblatt and singer-dancer Mackenzie Ziegler. Here’s how I think they should finish:
4th Place: Mackenzie Ziegler
I don’t mind ringers on “DWTS” too much as long as they don’t overshadow real amateurs who turn out to be great. For instance, Tinashe had significant dance experience this season on the adult show, but I’d much rather have seen her win than Bobby Bones. So while I think “Dance Moms” alum Ziegler has been an excellent competitor who deserves to be in the finals, I’d be hard-pressed to give her the Mirror Ball against any of the other three she’s up against, especially since the show ended up giving her dances in the both of the styles she has already been trained in: contemporary and jazz. That seemed especially unfair, so I’d save the top three spots for the less seasoned contestants.
3rd Place: Ariana Greenblatt
She has the most swagger of any contestant in the competition, the most confidence and fire. That has made her one of the most exciting contestants of the season to watch, especially when she has a dance that’s well suited to her, like her jazz routine on Giving Thanks Night, But I don’t think she has been quite as consistent as her rivals. So I’d give her a well deserved bronze medal.
2nd Place: Sky Brown
The Japanese skateboard star is actually the contestant I think probably will win thanks to her enormously appealing personality, which undoubtedly helps with the studio audience votes. Of the top four, she actually has the lowest judges’ scores, but I think that belies just how athletic, precise and intricate her movements are, how strong her chemistry with partner JT Church is, and how her personality brightens every dance style she has performed. She keeps saying she never wants this experience to end, and I kind of agree with her.
And the Mirror Ball champion should be … Miles Brown
Okay, while I’ve given Ziegler a hard time for her prior dance experience, Miles Brown started dancing at a young age too, so he’s not exactly a pure amateur either, but at least that’s not his primary claim to fame as it is for Ziegler. And honestly, I think he has eclipsed most of the other performers this season in terms of style, versatility, precision and personality. In the Semi-Finals he performed a duo routine with Ziegler and their respective pro partners, so he may as well have been dancing with three pros, and he had to learn his choreography by himself using videos while shooting “Black-ish.” But he still managed to be technically impeccable. If he were on the adult show, I think he could win that one too.
The good news for the season is that, on the basis of what we’ve seen from the contestants thus far, there would really be no bad winner. But maybe that’s just me. What do you think? Vote in our poll below to let us know who you think deserves the Mirror Ball.
