‘The Voice’ controversy: Was Adam Levine too harsh in saving sick Reagan Strange over stirring DeAndre Nico?

Things got real awkward on Tuesday night’s live results episode of “The Voice,” when Coach Adam Levine made the shrewd decision to take sides after both of his remaining artists, DeAndre Nico and Reagan Strange, landed in the bottom three (alongside Team Blake Shelton‘s Dave Fenley). Reagan had fallen ill and was unable to sing for the Instant Save, while DeAndre gave a stirring rendition of “All of Me” that had the coaches on their feet. But rather than heap praise on the Texas soul singer, Adam took his opportunity to plea for viewers at home to save Reagan, throwing DeAndre under the bus. Was Adam too harsh in his plea to save Reagan? Or did Adam do what was necessary to get the right artist into the semifinals?

“There’s an unbelievably talented little girl right now,” Adam stated following DeAndre’s performance, “who is not able to fight for her position on this show. You were fortunate enough to be able to sing and you sang like a champ. I urge [the viewers] to vote for this man because he should never have been in the bottom… but I have a very special relationship with Reagan. And I have two little girls at home. The thought of breaking her heart by not urging everyone to give this girl a shot to go and redeem herself next week… would be too far beneath me. I appreciate what you (DeAndre) have done here tonight, but I gotta fight for my girl.”

It was that statement by Adam, followed by a completely deflated look on DeAndre’s face, that led many viewers into an expletive-fueled outrage. Our own user Matt commented, “Are you f****** kidding me!? If Reagan wasn’t able to sing to save herself then send her home. Not fair to the guys! I am officially done with this show!” While Shunshine sounded off, “That’s total bull****, she can’t sing for her life she should’ve went home. The other two got screwed big time. It’s time to put an end to this show, and I used to like Adam but not so much anymore.”

Following the commercial break, coach Kelly Clarkson came to the defense of DeAndre as well. “I have been these contestants before and I know Adam and his heart and I know he loves his team,” she stated. “He feels really bad for Reagan, but I just want to say, DeAndre you just sang the hell out of that song.” The audience erupted in cheers before Carson made things more awkward, asking DeAndre if there was anything he’d like to say to Adam. “Thank you for your support,” he answered quickly. “Everything that you have done so far.”

In the end, Adam’s plea was a success. Reagan won the Instant Save by what appeared to be a narrow 38% to 37% margin over DeAndre. Dave received roughly 24% of the votes. Below are the eight contestants headed into next week’s semifinal.

Team Blake Shelton: Kirk Jay and Chris Kroeze

Team Jennifer Hudson: Kennedy Holmes and MaKenzie Thomas

Team Kelly Clarkson: Sarah Grace, Kymberli Joye and Chevel Shepherd

Team Adam Levine: Reagan Strange
